Who Else is Worthy?

In church the other Sunday we sang a new song called “Who Else,” and it really hit home for me. I love worship music and singing, as different words in different songs hit me in ways that only the Spirit can move. I would encourage you to go and listen to this song, “Who Else,” by Gateway Worship. The chorus of the song says:

Who else is worthy, Who else is worthy, There is no one, only You Jesus.

Wow what a powerful picture of our Father—the only one who is worthy.

As I was singing this refrain in church, I started to think deeper about what we were singing. Who or what do we put our worth in? As Christians we say that only Jesus is worthy, but is that what we show our kids, our co-workers, or the world? Do we say one thing but then show a different thing? Who else is worthy? Do we put sports, athletes, pride, technology, social media, work, money, looks, clothing, or any of a number of other things in the place of Jesus, who is truly worthy? As the saying goes, what matters most in your life is what you love the most and talk about the most. Jesus is worthy of everything, but not only that, He is worthy of all we do and talk about. Let Jesus be the most talked about in your life.

We tend to think that to be worthy of God’s loves we must be someone impressive or bring Him something. It is not about creating a list of things we do to love Jesus better. Jesus is reframing and reshaping our lives around Him. Life is NOT ABOUT YOU! It is always about God and pointing people back to Him. This reminds me of another worship song, “Gratitude,” in which the chorus says:

So I throw up my hands
And praise You again and again
‘Cause all that I have is a hallelujah, hallelujah
And I know it’s not much
But I’ve nothing else fit for a king
Except for a heart singing hallelujah
Hallelujah

We have nothing that is fit for a king. Let that sink in: we have nothing that is fit for the King. All we need to bring to God is a heart that is singing, “Hallelujah!” Hallelujah which means “God be praised.” Think of what will happen with our kids, our school, our teams, our jobs, our communities, and our world if this is what we demonstrate.

We are not worthy, and the only one who is worthy is Jesus.

At FRCS, students are challenged to think for themselves: to pursue questions of purpose and faith; to think critically about the world around them so that they can engage it, not avoid it; to make their faith their own so that they can remain strong in it even after they graduate
