Senior High Retreats


Students grades 9-11 retreat with their classes for two days of community building, adventure, and setting the tone for the coming school year. Only the junior’s retreat is an overnight experience.

9th Grade Retreat Details

The focus of the 9th Grade Adventure and Community Building Retreat is Problem Solving. Through team challenges, students develop skills in decision-making, leadership, goal-setting, and conflict resolution.

For this retreat, freshmen are divided into two groups.

Thursday, August 21; 8am-3pm

  • Students meet at FRCS shortly before 8am and then ride together to their group’s experience
  • Group 1: Orienteering in Evergreen
  • Group 2: Escape Room in Denver

Friday, August 22; 8am-3pm

  • Students meet at FRCS shortly before 8am and then ride together to their group’s experience
  • Group 1: Escape Room in Denver
  • Group 2: Orienteering in Evergreen

Specifics for each experience:

  • Orienteering day
    • What students should bring:
      • Day back pack with the items listed below
      • FULL water bottle
      • Snacks
      • Sack lunch
      • Athletic shoes with closed toe and closed heel (REQUIRED)
      • Comfortable, weather appropriate attire for an active day outside
      • Layers for variable temperatures
      • Sun protection (sunglasses, sunscreen, hat, etc.)
    • Students should not bring:
      • Sandals, flip-flops, crocs, open-toe or open-heel shoes
      • dangling jewelry and small valuables that might get lost
  • Escape Room day
    • What students should bring:
      • Water bottle
      • Athletic shoes (we will be walking quite a bit this day)
      • Sun protection
      • Money for lunch or a sack lunch

Notes for parents:

  • A waiver is required for the Orienteering experience, and it must be completed by Friday, August 15 (download the waiver)

10th Grade Retreat Details

The focus of the 10th Grade Adventure and Community Building Retreat is Problem Solving. Problem-Solving encourages students and groups to move beyond the comfortable. These challenges are for students to solve together through decision-making, group goals, leadership, and conflict resolution.

Thursday, August 21; 5:45am-3pm

  • White water rafting with Raft Masters Rafting in Cañon City
  • Meet at the school at 5:45am; we return to the school by 3pm
  • A waiver is required for this day. Please complete the waiver by Friday, August 15.
  • What to bring:
    • swimsuit/swim trunks (within dress code)
    • rafting shoes (NO flip-flops or Crocs)
    • water bottle
    • sunscreen
    • dry clothing for after rafting
  • Lunch is provided (hamburgers or hot dogs and chips) after rafting; if your child has dietary restrictions, please send your student with a sack lunch

Friday, August 22; 8am-3pm

  • Hiking at St. Mary’s Glacier
  • Meet at the school at 8am; we return to the school by 3pm
  • What to bring:
    • comfortable clothing appropriate for hiking
    • shoes appropriate for hiking (boots, trail runners, athletic shoes, etc.; no flip-flops or Crocs)
    • water bottle
    • sunscreen and other sun protection
    • sack lunch

11th Grade Retreat Details

The focus of the 11th Grade Adventure and Community Building Retreat is Challenge. “Challenge by choice” is an important phrase for our upperclassmen. Juniors are challenged to push the limits of what they think they are capable of, in regard to both adventure and relationships.

Thursday, August 21-Friday, August 22

  • This is an overnight retreat in Estes Park (YMCA of the Rockies lodge)
  • Students meet at FRCS at 6am on Thursday and arrive back at FRCS on Friday at 3pm
  • What to bring:
    • Overnight bag (details shared with students during Junior Seminar)
    • For Via Ferrata: Long shorts or pants, closed-toe shoes, hair ties, extra clothing layers, water bottle, sunscreen
    • Clothes and shoes suitable for hiking

Notes for parents

  • Please let Brian Gehr or Jeremy Wall know of any dietary restrictions for your student by Friday, August 15
  • The guides require a waiver be completed for each student; please complete the waiver by Friday, August 15

FRCS Dress Code for Student Experiences

(Retreats, J-Terms, Practicums, and AWE Outings)

General Reminder: Students are expected to follow the FRCS Dress Code for all student experiences. The following guidelines provide specific expectations for performance wear for students outings and experiences.

Ladies may wear:

  • Full-length leggings (shirts must be long enough to cover appropriately).
  • Spandex shirts (fitting within the dress code guidelines).
  • Athletic tank tops (should have a three-finger minimum width on the straps).

Ladies may NOT wear:

  • Short shorts (must extend at least mid-thigh length).
  • Shirts or tops that are too revealing or inappropriate for the setting.

Gentlemen may wear:

  • Athletic wear such as workout shorts, joggers, and performance shirts.
  • Full-length athletic pants or shorts that adhere to the dress code.

Gentlemen may NOT wear:

  • Short shorts (must extend at least mid-thigh length).
  • Tank tops or sleeveless shirts.
