Here are definitions for each:
Independent Student Learning (ISL)
Students with an ISL on their schedule are able to use these times for studying, homework, or community without direct supervision. Students with an ISL must remain in designated FRCS common areas which include the lunch room, atrium, and patios. Juniors and Seniors may leave campus during their ISL periods, provided that the appropriate forms are signed and on file with the office and that they sign out at the front desk before leaving campus.
Directed Student Learning (DSL)
The DSL is a supervised and monitored time. Students must report to a specific location, attendance is taken, and the time is monitored to ensure that it is used in an academic manner (completing homework, studying, reading, journaling, tutoring, etc.). Even if a student has a DSL scheduled for the first or last period of the day, attendance is taken, so students are expected to be on campus and in the appropriate classroom during these times. A student who fails to report for a DSL is marked absent. Our hope is that, by creating these structured times during our school day, we can minimize the amount of time that students are required to spend on coursework while at home. Student learning outcomes are also greatly improved by having these times available for teachers to work with students or for students to reach out and pursue extra help from teachers while on our campus.
All student schedules display whether a student is assigned to a DSL or an ISL, but if you have any questions or need further clarification, please feel free to reach out to either Mr. Wall or Mr. Spector.
