Adventure and Wilderness Experiences (AWE)

Strong and courageous: Building confidence, character, and community

At Front Range Christian School, we believe that education is more than academics—it’s the shaping of a student’s whole person. Adventure and Wilderness Experiences (AWE) is a unique program for students grades 7-12 that uses outdoor adventure, challenge and reflection to help students grow in courage, resiliency, and confidence from a biblical worldview.

Grounded in Joshua 1:9: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” AWE invites students to step out of their comfort zones, discover their God-given strengths, and learn how to bring those lessons back into their everyday lives.

MISSION & VISION
Mission: AWE exists to develop strong and courageous students who grow in resiliency, confidence, and faith through outdoor challenge and community.
Vision: Every outing follows the AWE framework of conversation, challenge, conviction, and choices, equipping students to live faithfully and lead courageously at school, at home, and in the wider world.

Every AWE outing combines adventure, reflection, and faith in three key ways:

  • Conversation: Students are known, share their stories,, and build meaningful relationships.
  • Challenge: Each activity presents obstacles and growth opportunities, showing students they can do hard things.
  • Conviction & Choices: Through reflection, students discover new truths, convictions, and habits they can bring back to daily life—in the classroom, the hallways, their families, and beyond.
  • Seasonal Adventures: Students may choose from fall, winter, or spring activities (e.g., hiking, rock climbing, skiing, mountaineering, paddleboarding, and more).
  • Day Trips: Most outings run from 7:30am-3pm on Tuesdays or Thursdays to avoid conflicts with chapel, dGroups, and extracurricular activities. Some outings may return later in the day.
  • Transportation Provided: FRCS provides transportation to and from each outing.
  • Gear Required: Students are responsible for required gear (lists are provided in the AWE Catalog); FRCS has limited loaner gear available.

Parents can be confident their students are:

  • Growing in courage, confidence, and resiliency
  • Experiencing God’s creation in a place of restoration and challenge
  • Building lasting friendships and memories
  • Learning how to apply lessons from the outdoors to their everyday life at FRCS and beyond
Who can and should participate in an AWE outing?

All students grade 7-12!

  • Each student may participate in one (1) AWE outing per school year
  • Outings are designed to be approachable for all skill levels — from leisure and restorative activities to dynamic, physically demanding adventures.
  • Students are placed in small groups (5-7 peers) for strong community and shared growth.
How much does AWE cost and what commitments are expected?
  • There are no program fees; AWE is included as a part of the FRCS experience.
  • Students provide their own gear when needed; FRCS will assist when possible.
  • Absences for AWE outings are excused; students are responsible for staying on top of assignments in communication with teachers.
How does a student sign up for an AWE outing?
  • Ongoing enrollment: Students may sign up at any time during the school year (there is no deadline)
  • Seasonal Choice: Activities should be chosen according to season (e.g., paddleboarding in fall, skiing in winter)
  • Next Step: email Mr. Wall (jwall@frcs.org) with the outing of choice and adventure level. Once arrangements are made, families will receive finalized details.

Every student is invited. Every student is encouraged. Every student belongs in AWE.

Discover the outing that best fits your student, and join us in shaping the next generation to live boldly for Christ!

Important Note for Parents

If your student has a medical condition that may require an intervention (ex: diabetes, seizure disorder, fainting), please consider whether retreats or practicums at altitude are in their best interest. If accommodations need to be made to attend the practicum, retreat, or AWE of choice, please check in with the school nurse to be sure this is communicated with the chaperones so we can care for your student well.
