Educational Background and Experience BA in Spanish and Elementary Education from Calvin College. Studied in Spain; traveled to numerous Spanish speaking countries; attended several foreign language teacher conferences; developed elementary Spanish program in Ohio.
Why I Teach Growing up, everyone always told me that I should consider teaching as a profession. As many young people do, I doubted that, but enrolled in Calvin’s Education program anyway. During my studies, a wise professor and mentor told me that I wasn't allowed to decide whether or not I wanted to teach until I had taught in the same position in the same school for three years in a row.
Upon graduating, I was hired at FRCS to teach 2nd grade. I taught for that one year and then moved to Ohio with my husband where I did various jobs before finally landing my "three year" position. I taught K-4 Spanish at an all-girls school and truly discovered there, after three consecutive years, that teaching was indeed in my life blood. I especially fell in love with teaching Spanish to young children. It is one of the things I was created to do and, like Eric Liddell in Chariots of Fire, I "feel God's pleasure" every time I get to use my Spanish language and teaching skills together.
Why I Teach at Front Range Christian After teaching 2nd grade in 1997-1998 at FRCS, I stayed in contact with a few families and administrators. When Eric and I moved our family back to Colorado after being in Ohio for four years, I did some substitute teaching at FRCS while my children were young. When they approached school age, I knew I wanted them to have a positive school experience and one where they would have a good opportunity to learn Spanish. There weren't any strong elementary Spanish programs in Christian schools that we looked at, so I decided to start one. Thankfully, after maintaining those relationships from ten years prior, the administration at FRCS was willing to take a risk on my idea of an elementary Spanish program. And today, we have over 45 students enrolled! I consider it an honor and privilege to be a part of the Speak Easy! Spanish program at FRCS.
My Passion Providing authentic opportunities for children to be exposed to the Spanish language and culture.
My Hobbies Reading, camping, hiking, cooking, traveling to Spanish-speaking countries, spending time with friends and family, worshiping, dreaming of new possibilities, playing board and card games, and a new favorite, Sudoku.
