LITTLETON, Colorado (April 20, 2011) - On Thursday, April 7, students at Front Range Christian Elementary School celebrated Young Author’s Day. To launch the day, students and staff welcomed NY Times bestselling author Alec Greven, the 9-year old author of How to Talk to Girls. Greven, who has appeared on programs such as Good Morning America and The Today Show, shared with students about his experiences being a published author, including working with editors and traveling around the country. Students also learned about the writing process, from idea to publication.
Denie Dalton, 3rd grade teacher at Front Range Christian Elementary, organized the day-long event, which included the presentation by Greven, stations in 5 classrooms highlighting different authors, and presentations of books authored by Front Range Christian students. Dalton commented, “The value of Young Author’s Day is to show the importance of the writing process and encourage kids to put forth the effort to write well themselves.”

First, second, third, and fifth grade students participated in the event. Jamie Smith, a 3rd grade student in Mrs. Dalton’s class, commented, “I like Young Author’s Day because each author is different; some write fiction and some non-fiction.” Jesslyn Norton, also a 3rd grade student, said, “Young Author’s Day was fun because some books had new words, and in one book we even had to make up our own story with our own words!” Students presented their own works which ranged from mystery and poetry to research and essays.
