Two well-off sisters are flung into poverty after their investments sour and the younger sister's love interest runs off to fight Napoleon. Ten years later, the soldier returns to find that the sisters are forced to run a school and have aged badly; however, through a series of misapprehensions the younger sister is able to disguise herself and attend a ball with her former flame.
