The Curious Savage

John Patrick's "The Curious Savage" takes place in a sanatorium called The Cloisters with Ethel P. Savage as the latest patient to be admitted. The word cloistered means "concealed or withdrawn from the world." This is just where Mrs. Savage's stepchildren want her. Hopefully by committing her into this institution, they can somehow get their hands on the ten million dollars their father left to their stepmother. While this "drama" is going on between Mrs. Savage and her stepchildren, the other patients in the sanatorium add a charming slant to the conflict and reveal a truth regarding relationships that is more whole and more redeeming than the relationships among the Savages. There is much to enjoy in the show, and if you pay attention, there is much to learn.
